How did all begin? In autumn 2006 Celia played a long string of one-nighters through Europe following a course towards Copenhagen and resulting in a meeting with Thomas. Events converged and gained momentum, there was a genuine exchange of ideas and lots of playing in Denmark and Brazil. Malta (the obvious choice) joined the trio and it all resulted in this album, recorded in Rio de Janeiro.

Thomas Clausen has long been considered a master of Brazilian piano music in the same league as Luis Eça, Luis Carlos Vinhas, Jobim, Gismonti, Cezar Camargo Mariano and Hermeto Pascoal. He has recorded and performed in his own and with so many of world's greatest musicians like Miles Davis, Gary Burton, Dexter Gordon, Thad Jones, Elvin Jones, Ben Webster, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Henderson, Toots Thielemans, Stan Getz, Stanley Turrentine, Chet Baker... Thomas has received numerous awards including the Danish Grammy for "Cafe Noir" ( 1990) with Gary Burton.

 

Carlos Malta (Brazil) is know as the "sculptor of the wind". A multi- instrumentalist virtuoso in all saxophones and flutes including shakuhashi (Japan), di-zi (China) and many other Brazilian indigenous and ethnic flutes. Following a long-standing collaboration with Hermeto Pascoal, he has received critical acclaim for his Pife Muderno ensemble and the many releases on his own including a tribute to Elis Regina that caused international attention. He has performed and recorded with Edu Lobo, Hermeto Pascoal, Arturo Sandoval, Ivan Lins, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Lenine, Guinga.

The selection are pure delicacies-a beautiful journey into a sensuous landscape of choros, sambas and "folk tunes" from the northeast Brazil and beyond. All but one selection on this pearl of an album are composed by the members of the tRIO.

Carlos Malta reaches Shorter'esque heights on the soprano sax. Thomas Clausen cavorts in the hushed world of the choro, in which his solos shine like polished marbles only to fly away on the wings of sambas. Celia malheiros is an electrifying and powerful singer, composer, guitarist and percussionist.
